Introduction
Ozel Buyuk Fen Lisesi, (dba. Buyuk Kolej, Fen Lisesi, Science High School)
Büyük Science High School is a school of science where students and teachers make progress in line with their academic goals by using technological means in a science-oriented environment. All students of Büyük Science High School complete their social and emotional development in parallel with the program tailored for them. The Büyük Science High School is not only a science school but also a valuable part of the thriving Büyük Kolej school. It benefits all social and physical facilities of Büyük Kolej that satisfy the highest health, safety and hygiene standards.
Büyük Science High School Program adopts an approach that focuses on the preparation of students for higher education in their targeted areas and ensures that they attain the required proficiency in the second foreign language of their choice. Efforts aimed at improving students' personal skills such as laboratory practices, project studies and national and international activities are implemented in addition to the basic courses taught in line with a scientific approach.
Students study at a support program preparing for higher education as well as the curriculum proposed by the Ministry of National Education. They take nationally-applied tests to prepare for university entrance exams, the most important exams in their lives, under the guidance of specialized teachers. Training events supported by projects such as Maths Olympics as well as club efforts, social and cultural trips and artistic and sporting activities are carried out for students to grow up as individuals who think independently and know and understand not only their own environment and culture but also the world and different cultures.
Events
Theater: A play prepared every year by the High School Turkish Theater Club is staged by volunteering students before teachers, parents and students.
Chemistry Experiment Festival: Chemistry Experiment Festival is held every year to educate the scientists of the future, improve experimental skills of students and enable them to transfer what they have learned to their friends as well as their little brothers and sisters.
Critical Thinking and Debate: As part of the activities of Büyük Kolej Debate Club, two teams representing Büyük Kolej and Büyük Science High School participate in the Critical Thinking and Debate Championship every year in order to develop and improve effective speaking skills, gain the ability to think rationally, critically and objectively, reinforce team awareness and spirit, improve the overall cultural knowledge of students in any field, and contribute to the mortar of human engineering. Science Festival: Science Festival is a traditional activity held in April or May each year. It aims to render students as productive individuals who do research, internalize the steps of scientific methods, associate knowledge with life and apply such knowledge. Students present their projects on a topic of their own interest at Büyük Kolej Multipurpose Sports Hall to Büyük Kolej students as well as visiting students, parents and three faculty members from the universities acting as the jury. The Science Festival not only teaches methods of scientific studies but also allows students to express themselves. Students developing the projects enjoy the excitement of practically seeing and demonstrating the topics they are interested in while other participants learn interesting and functional information on many Science and Technology-related subjects. The Science and Technology Department follows and guides students exhibiting their projects from the project decision until the end of the Science Festival.
Plastic Arts End-of-Year Exhibition: Various painting and drawing works by high school students prepared in Visual Arts classes throughout the year are presented to parents during the Plastic Arts Exhibition held at the end of the year.
The achievement of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students at Büyük Kolej is assessed in line with the MoNE regulation on grade passing and exams for secondary education. In such assessment, the curriculum as well as learning achievements are taken as basis and scores from written exams, practical exams, performances and projects are considered in line with the specific features of the course.
Regardless of weekly course hours, a minimum of two written exams are organized for each course.
Students are required to prepare at least one performance for each course in each semester and a project for at least one course in each academic year. Guidance teachers inform the school administration on the lesson(s) for which each student will prepare a project. Two performance points are awarded for each course in each semester. Assessment scales for performances, projects and other works are determined upon decisions of each department. One of these performance points is given for the performance while the other is given according to each student's course preparation, attendance, active participation and exemplary behaviors.
For a student to be deemed successful in any course at the end of the academic year, the arithmetic mean of their scores for two semesters should be at least 50 or their second semester score should be at least 70 regardless of their first semester score. Students who have a minimum end of year achievement point of 50 among students who are successful in all courses and students who have failed course(s) pass the class directly on the condition that they have two semester points for each course at the end of the academic year. Students who fail the courses for which they cannot be considered successful in consideration of the end of year achievement score are given a conditional pass for the course(s) concerned.
Students who fail a maximum of 3 courses at a certain grade from among students who cannot directly pass the grade are given a conditional pass on the condition that they have two semester points for each course at the end of the academic year. However, those who have failed more than a total of 6 courses including lower grades repeat the grade. The conditional pass exams are held in the first week of the first and second semesters in accordance with the principles on written and/or applied exams held during the academic year. The conditional pass is lifted if the student succeeds in the conditional pass exam for a given course.
Those who fail directly or by end of year achievement score or due to absence or on conditional pass repeat the grade.
For each grade of secondary education institutions, the achievements of students are assessed
in consideration of the scores below.
Exams, performances, projects and practices are evaluated over a scale of 100 full points. Evaluation results are recorded in e-School system. Values and ratings of points are provided below.
Point Rating
- 85.00-100 Very Good
- 70.00-84.99 Good
- 60.00-69.99 Intermediate
- 50.00-59.99 Pass
- 0-49.99 Fail
The end of year score for a course is the arithmetic mean of the first and second semester scores. When calculating the arithmetic mean for semester scores, the division is performed up to two decimal places.
It is important that the attendance and grades of students are monitored over the e-school parent information system without waiting for a school report at the end of the semester.
PRACTICE
Student Admission and Scholarship Exams: They are applied to prospective students who aim to study at our school. The readiness levels of students are reviewed before we make decisions on the process of enrollment and scholarship of prospective students.
Readiness Practice: It determines what our students remember from the previous academic year before the start of the new academic year. The new academic year begins by recapping the subjects from the previous year.
Follow-up Exams: A general follow-up exam is applied at the end of each subject or every two subjects according to the intensity of the subject. The aim is to identify missing and incorrect learning more quickly through evaluation at more frequent intervals.
Department Exams: For all grades from 4th grade to 12th grade, these exams are applied on the basis of evaluation of student achievement on the dates determined at the beginning of each academic year in accordance with regulations.
Mid-term and Final Assessment: Mid-term and end-of-term assessment exams are applied to reveal the development process of our middle school and high school students. In addition, our students are encouraged to take general exams with wide participation in order to see their place among students of other schools. This is held for high school students on a Saturday each month.
Trial Exams: Periodical trial exams are applied to our students in order to prepare them for university entrance exams, the measurement tool for the system of Transition to Secondary and Higher Education. In addition, students are encouraged to take the trial exams by independent institutions in order for them to gain examination experience.
